Summary

This job involves leading a team to maintain and repair machinery and equipment at a correctional facility on Oahu, including planning work, inspecting items, and ensuring safety.

The current vacancy is with Oahu Community Correctional Center located in Kalihi.

Requirements

Supervises and participates in the adjustment, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of machinery and equipment; in addition to performing skilled mechanical repair work, plans, lays out, assigns and reviews the work of subordinates; works alongside subordinates to set pace and quality of work; instructs and monitors the safe and proper use of equipment and tools; inspects machinery and equipment for needed repairs; reads and interprets blueprints or sketches; estimates material and labor costs, submits requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment; prepares reports of work accomplished.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Experience & Training: Five (5) years of work experience in the mechanical repair and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment, of which one (1) year shall have been as a fully competent maintenance mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NOTE: Maintenance/repair work as a general laborer or as a home owner of your personal residence/property is not qualifying.

Knowledge of: Practices and methods in the mechanical repair trade, including safety procedures; the tools, equipment and materials used in the mechanical repair trade.

Ability to: Use the power and hand tools common to the mechanical repair trade; detect malfunctions in operating machinery and make repairs; estimate material, parts and labor necessary to perform mechanical maintenance jobs, and keep records and make reports; recognize hazards typical of the work, and take safety actions; plan, lay out and review the work of other skilled maintenance mechanics; understand, give and follow oral and written instructions; perform heavy lifting, moving and other manual work typical of the class.

Select Certification Requirement: This position shall be restricted to applicants whose work experience included at least one (1) year which involved independent welding duties or the successful completion of a certified welding apprenticeship training program.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that "...an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who:

1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged
in the activity described in #2 above.
4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.

Other Requirements: Applicants who are conditionally offered employment or conditionally approved for movement into positions with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation shall be subject to drug screening, as required by Federal, State or local laws or departmental policy; and will be subject to an intensive background check.

Driver's License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. The current vacancy has this requirement.
