The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a motivated and mechanically inclined individual to provide essential maintenance repairs and maintenance of the areas landscaped and irrigation systems.

In this role, you will perform hands-on maintenance and testing of water system infrastructure such as backflow prevention devices, drains, valves, sprinklers, and controllers to ensure proper operation.

Other responsibilities also include maintaining inventory of parts and materials, activating and deactivating systems, and assisting with roadside activities such as herbicide application and vegetation management.

A strong candidate will demonstrate proficiency in administrative and financial processes, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, ability to manage diverse tasks in both office and field settings, and a commitment to safety, organization, and customer service.


What to Expect

This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic.

Duties may include working at elevated heights above 25 feet above land or water, assisting others in a confined environment, negotiating rough, steep terrain; and performing work low to the ground and working around chemicals and products such as herbicides, gasoline, diesel, solvents, oils, lubricants, paint, cleaners, and hot asphalt.

Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Rotational night shift is required.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic will:

  • Maintain and operate controls for landscaped areas and irrigation systems.
  • Perform snow and ice control to include snow plowing and application of anti-icing compounds and abrasives to road surface with truck mounted equipment.
  • Load trucks from stockpiles and liquid tanks.
  • Adhere to the Winter Operations Plan including Safety, Pre-Trip equipment inspections, Application Guidelines, Treatment Level Goals, and record keeping.
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations, and full road or bridge closures according to departmental and MUTCD standards.
  • Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures and detours.
  • Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Respond first to accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
  • Plan work activities and lead crew, assign work and work operations.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Facilities Maintenance: Experience in performing irrigation, landscape, and roadway maintenance. Proficient in safety focused use of irrigation, landscape, and road maintenance heavy equipment or equivalent relevant experience in logging, farming, or excavation.

The following qualifications are also required:

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License Endorsement N (Air Brake restriction removed).
  • A valid CDL medical card.
  • A Backflow Tester Certificate, or able to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • A Pesticide Operator License, or able to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • A valid Washington State Flagging Card, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an afterhours call.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Roadway Maintenance Expertise: Experience in performing roadway maintenance, highway construction, and/or bridge maintenance/construction.
  • Leadership and Team Collaboration: Demonstrated success working effectively within a team providing direction, mentoring, support; effective delegation of work to others.
