This job involves hands-on maintenance and repair of underground and overhead cables used for power, lighting, communications, and signals, including tasks like splicing wires, climbing poles, and working in tight spaces like manholes.
It's a skilled manual role for someone who enjoys physical outdoor work and has experience with electrical systems.
A good fit would be a reliable, detail-oriented person with at least two years in similar maintenance roles and comfort with heights and confined areas.
Climbs poles; replaces damaged or worn overhead wire and cable crossarms and related hardware; installs multiple conductor cables; rods ducts.
Paints and stencils crossarms, fuses, fuse boxes; assembles porcelain fuse blocks. Sends and receives signals over fire alarm system to test lines. Prepares simple reports of work done.
Basic computer skills. Ability to climb poles and to work in small and confined areas, i.e. underground. Knowledge of specialized tools and equipment for cables. Ability to read and write.
Must have at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in maintenance and repair of power, lighting, communications and signals.
Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. Must be a resident of the city of Boston. Electrical experience is preferred. A high school diploma or GED to substitute for one year of experience.
