The Public Works Department is actively seeking a Light Equipment Maintenance Technician.

This is skilled craft work in the repair and maintenance of a variety of light equipment and machinery.

Work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in small engine repairs and light equipment maintenance which involves the use of specialized skills or specialized equipment which is learned on the job or through specialized training.

Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification.

Work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents and, although patterned, some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate technique, method, or procedure to follow.

Work is performed indoors or outdoors in extreme hot or cold temperatures where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable.

Depending on assignment, work may involve contact with hazardous materials such as insecticide concentrates, gasoline, oils, and cleaning solvents.

Operates vehicles with a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more such as one-ton pickup trucks, utility vehicles and dump trucks.

Maintains and operates shop equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors, bush hogs, chain saws, pumps, cement mixers, edgers, portable generators, spray machines, tamps, concrete saws, utility trailers compressors, power driven post hole diggers, welding machines, gas torches, air & power tools, drills, grinders, compressors, tire changing machines, and other types of specialized equipment and hand tools associated with the repair and maintenance of light equipment and machinery.

Operates standard office equipment such as a personal computer.

Work is performed in both an office environment and in the field, where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable.

Work involves moderate physical activity and demands which may include lifting objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more.

Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior’s approval.

Requirements

  • Troubleshoots, maintains and repairs light equipment and machinery to include gasoline and diesel engines up to thirty (30) horsepower used to power lawnmowers, tractors, bush hogs, chain saws, pumps, cement mixers, edgers, portable generators, spray machines, tamps, concrete saws, compressors, and power-driven post hole diggers.
  • Performs minor welding in cutting, burning, and brazing equipment parts.
  • Performs minor body and painting work to equipment for safety and rust prevention purposes.
  • Orders and picks up parts.
  • Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
  • Trains small groups on how to perform basic daily maintenance on small equipment.
    Maintain cleanliness of shop area, shop equipment & tools, cleans and services shop equipment.
  • Operates a motor vehicle.
  • Operates standard office equipment such as a personal computer.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the techniques, methods, procedures and hazards associated with the repair and maintenance of light equipment and machinery to include gasoline and diesel engines up to thirty (30) horsepower.
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and instruments used in the repair and maintenance of light equipment and machinery.
  • Skill in troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing light equipment and machinery.
  • Skill in using hand tools, instruments, and other specialized equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of light equipment, utility trailers, vehicles and machinery.
  • Ability to use burning and welding equipment.
  • Ability to place orders for parts.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to clean and service equipment, utility trailers & minor vehicle repair.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, including manuals, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles including one-ton pickup trucks and dump trucks when needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to use and operate standard office equipment such as a personal computer.

Additional Information

  • One (1) year of education and/or experience in the repair and maintenance of light equipment and machinery, including but not limited to lawnmowers, tractors, bush hogs, chain saws, pumps, cement mixers, edgers, portable generators, spray machines, compressors, and power driven post hole diggers, welding machines, gas torches, drills, grinders, compressors, tire changing machines.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of application and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for, obtain and maintain a City of Jacksonville public driver certification for employment in this class.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
