This full-time lifeguard position with the City of Norfolk's Parks & Recreation Department involves monitoring swimmers at pools and beaches to keep everyone safe, performing rescues and first aid if needed, and helping run daily activities like swim lessons.
It also includes maintaining the facilities and assisting with program planning.
A good fit would be someone reliable and physically fit who enjoys working with the public, even without prior experience, as long as they can pass basic swimming and safety tests.

Ensure the safety of swimmers and facility patrons using American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards and RPOS Aquatic Division standards of care.
Utilize preventative lifeguarding skills, enforce facility rules and perform site safety inspections. Perform water rescues, administer medical aid/ CPR/ the use of AED and emergency oxygen as needed.
Complete required documentation and, perform maintenance at pools, waterfronts and/or beaches.
May assist with the implementation of daily aquatic programs, activities, events and assist with operations of facility.
Requires the use of site-specific emergency medical and rescue equipment for swimming pools, beaches and/or waterfronts.
Assists in managing facility operations including testing of pool chemistry, completing documentation, cleaning duties, facility maintenance, and required to perform other related duties as directed.
Performs pool reception duties, program promotions and registration duties as required.
Follows management directives and complies to standards of operation as required by management Qualifications Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines.
Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.No experience required.Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): Valid Driver's License depending on assignment; current Red Cross Lifeguard Training or YMCA Lifeguard Training Certificate; current CPR Certification (CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer); current First Aid Certification and level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.Successful completion of al swimming competency, job knowledge examination, and water rescue skills screening is required.
Additional Information Work Location: Various City of Norfolk Pools and Oceanfront Work Hours: Hours scheduled between 6:00AM and 9:00PM; flexible hours will apply
