Job Description
Summary
This job is for a Lieutenant in charge of environmental health and safety at a correctional facility, where you'll inspect the site for fire, safety, and sanitation issues, train staff and inmates on safe practices, and investigate accidents to keep everyone protected.
It's a hands-on role ensuring rules are followed and hazards are managed in a prison setting.
A good fit would be someone with experience in security or corrections who is detail-oriented, good at training others, and committed to safety in high-stakes environments.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- One year of supervisory experience (or equivalent degree substitution)
- Degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for experience
- Must complete SCDC Basic Training (four weeks) upon hire
- Must be certified by SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory course within six months
- Ability to handle documentation, investigations, and compliance with safety regulations
Full Job Description
- Completes inspections of facility to ensure compliance for all phases of institutional fire, safety, and sanitation as it relates to policies and regulations.
- Provides guidance and consultation to institutional personnel to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety programs.
- Provide safety training for both staff and inmates and conduct inspections to ensure that they properly perform all assigned duties and post procedures in a safe manner.
- Investigates reported hazards, accidents, injuries, and other incidents which impact health, welfare and safety of employees and inmates.
- Ensure all documentation of such is completed and forwarded accordingly.
- Ensures control and proper use of all hazardous materials/contaminants in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Ensure all workers’ compensation is completed, entered and forwarded in a timely manner.
- Completes and maintains OSHA log and other documentation.
- Ensure adequate safety of public, inmates and institutions.
Must successfully complete four (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
