Summary
This job is for a lieutenant in a South Carolina prison, where you'll lead security teams, manage inmate safety and daily operations, and handle issues like disputes or rule violations.

You'll need to complete training and focus on keeping everything running smoothly and safely.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- One year of supervisory experience (or equivalent degree substitution)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for required experience
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of hire
Full Job Description
- Plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
- Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
- Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
- Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
- Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
