The Department of Health Services is currently recruiting to fill one full-time and two extra-help Licensed Vocational Nurse positions at either the I or II levels.

About the Positions

The Department of Health Services' Youth and Family Services Foster Youth Team (FYT)is looking for a full-time Licensed Vocational Nurse to provide nursing care to children and youth in their outpatient services. This liaison position will be embedded within the Human Services Department Youth and Children Child Protective Services Office to aid in the psychotropic medication monitoring for foster youth. They will work closely with Public Health Nurses, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, and Legal Processors to track, monitor, and help fill out the Applications for Psychotropic Medication Forms (JV 220 and JV 216) for our foster youth. This role will be educating parents or foster parents, social workers, and health workers on the JV 220 process. They will also be required to effectively partner with clinics and hospitals, ensuring the proper care and medications are considered for foster youth.

The Department of Health Services Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is looking for two extra-help Licensed Vocational Nurses to provide specialized and mandated nursing services to individuals experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

These positions will be required to work on-site at our Santa Rosa unit, working as part of a 24-hour multi-disciplinary team.

This role will partner with clinic staff in crisis intervention and de-escalation, seclusion and restraint, and assist with maintaining client safety.

Preparing meals and completing other daily living skills will also be required.

Please note that this program runs 24 hours a day/7 days a week in a locked facility for adults, children, and families experiencing a mental health crisis.

The incumbents may be required to work evenings, holidays, weekends, and/or overnights.

Additional duties will include:

  • Answering client and caregiver inquiries about medications, including side effects, refill issues, and lab work
  • Taking verbal medication orders from psychiatrists
  • Coordinating care with primary care providers, including requesting medical referrals, lab orders, and visit notes
  • Processing and managing referrals for clients stepping down to lower levels of care
  • Documenting all services in the electronic health record and reporting urgent needs to the psychiatrists

As an ideal candidate for these positions, you will work well in a multi-disciplinary team, have experience working with children and their families, and possess many of the following:

  • Prior recovery-focused professional experience with substance abuse disorder and/or mental health clients
  • Experience working with and documenting services with an electronic health record
  • A calm demeanor, especially when needing to work with upset clients or parents
  • The ability to build relationships across clinical team members and clients
  • An interest in working in a clinic environment, where there may be limited face-to-face client interaction
  • A familiarity with community resources
  • Attention to detail and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced working environment
  • English/Spanish bilingual skills are desired, but not required
  • Ability to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and holiday shifts are desired for the CSU positions

Extra-Help Employment

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Intermittent, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions.

In addition, they do not receive most regular employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage, accrual of vacation, participation in the County retirement program, or eligibility to take promotional examinations.

Intermittent, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of 1,380 hours within any twelve-month consecutive period.

Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

This Licensed Vocational Nurse I employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

Requirements

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and work experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein. Normally, this would include graduation from an accredited Vocational Nursing Program.

Professional License: Possession of a current California license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). LVN license must be maintained as a condition of employment in this classification. Possession of current CPR and First Aid certifications is desirable.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

The position advertised on this announcement does not require possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Qualifications

Knowledge of: vocational nursing theory and practice, rules, regulations and procedures; medical vocabulary commonly used in conveying instructions and orders between doctors, nurses, and licensed psychiatric technicians; mandated client rights, confidentiality requirements for medical information; medical supplies and equipment, their care and use; basic communicable disease; infection control practices and procedures; basic emergency care; California laws governing treatment of involuntary clients; principles of Trauma-Informed and Recovery-Oriented care; the use, administration, and effects of narcotics and medicines; and behavioral patterns and symptoms of clients under the influence of alcohol and substances of abuse.

Ability to: follow oral and written directions of nursing technical and professional nature; communicate with clients empathetically and compassionately; maintain and interpret medical records and reports; write progress notes to Medi-Cal standards; stand and walk for long periods and work under mental and physical strain; occasionally restrain clients; work as part of a team; establish and maintain effective working relationships; maintain client rights and privacy as it relates to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996); and abide by established communications codes.
