Job Description
Summary
This job is for a licensed practical nurse working in a state correctional facility in Iowa, where you'll provide medical care to inmates, including assessments, treatments, and emergency response during evening and overnight shifts.
It involves documenting patient care, collaborating with healthcare teams, and sometimes training staff or inmates on health topics.
A good fit would be a reliable nurse who is comfortable in a high-pressure environment, has strong communication skills, and is committed to working irregular hours including weekends.
Key Requirements
- Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing or under the Nurse Licensure Compact
- Ability to complete nursing assessments, physical exams, and procedures on inmates and staff
- Proficiency in providing emergency first aid, CPR, and responding to code blue situations promptly
- Skills in documenting assessments, interventions, and evaluations using computer systems and following DOC policies
- Experience in psychiatric nursing, including assessing patients and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
- Strong written and verbal communication in English, including reporting to medical personnel
- Availability for 10-hour evening and overnight shifts, every other weekend

Plan, implement and evaluate health care:
* Includes completing nursing assessments on Incarcerated Individuals.
* Includes physical examinations of all reported Incarcerated Individual injuries/illness (may include
staff injuries).
* Includes nursing procedures.
* Provide emergency first aid and CPR.
* Must be able to respond to Code Blue or emergency situations with arrival in an expedient, timely
manner.
Document nursing functions completed utilizing DOC policy/procedures:
* Document nursing assessments, interventions, planning and evaluations.
* Must be able to document in order to accurately describe events or findings.
* Must be able to speak, write and follow instructions in the English language.
* Must be aware of and comply with all policies/procedures.
* Must complete computer documentation.
General Psychiatric Nurse Duties:
* Assess patients to identify appropriate psychiatric nursing interventions.
* Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate client care.
* Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in client's condition.
Communicate as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDP):
Must be able to deliver written and verbal information to Incarcerated Individuals and off-site
medical personnel.
Ensure that training is provided:
* Provide Incarcerated Individual training, i.e., medication, daily cares.
* Provide staff training.
Assist with direct health services;
* Including assisting physician, dentist, optometrist, X-ray and/or lab services.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
