Basic Requirement for Librarian: Education: Completed one full academic year of graduate study in library science from an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree.

(NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts) OR A total of at least five years in a combination of college-level education, training, and experience.

To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

Experience must have demonstrated the ability to perform, supervise, or direct one or more of the functional areas of work covered by this series; to understand the concepts, theories, new developments, and co-relationship of information in related fields; and to maintain up-to-date information on the state of the art.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: working as a librarian providing reference services to a medical or nursing department or school (e.g.

School of Medicine) at a teaching hospital, university hospital, or academic health sciences institution; providing supervision, leadership, or direction to employees and their work and documenting performance for action to leadership; developing formal instructions to present to a range of audiences in a variety of settings; and managing searches for research projects, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to Detail Customer Service Decision Making Flexibility Integrity/Honesty Interpersonal Skills Learning Reasoning Self-Management Stress Tolerance Teamwork Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Major Duties:

  • Supervise one librarian, two library technician positions and volunteers.
  • Implement specific and general provisions of government-wide and installation personnel, EEO and other programs.
  • Promote medical library services and information (described by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Associations as knowledge-based information) to assigned health care providers and affiliated students at Madigan.
  • Define the scope of the collections; ensures books are current, relevant and support the various, particularly education, missions of the medical center.
  • Manage all aspects of the library and information program, including planning, justifying, and executing the budget, obtaining additional funding to support projects.
  • Develop new approaches for other librarians/library managers to use in solving problems or in expanding services.
