Become a Labor & Industries Electrical Construction Inspector 3 and start making a difference by providing safety inspections of electrical installations!


The position’s primary mission is to provide an additional layer of safety to Washington's most vulnerable citizens, by verifying the proper size and calculation of services and feeders, the proper design of emergency and standby systems, and classification of hazardous locations.


This position will:

(1) Help provide an electrically safe place for Washington consumers and workers to live and work.

(2) Use detailed knowledge of the electrical laws, rules, policies, procedures and experience to help ensure that submitted electrical designs or virtual inspections are compliant with current electrical code and rules, and free from electrical hazards.

(3) Work collaboratively with electrical engineers, contractors, inspectors, other electrical inspector 3s, and supervisors; coordinate and direct statewide electrical activities, in order to communicate and promote uniform electrical designs and safe installations.

(4) Respect our customers and assist them in complying with applicable laws using education and communication.

Requirements

Some of what you will do:

Electrical Plans Review
  • Examines new and altered electrical installation plans that primarily involve educational, institutional and health or personal care occupancies for compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), and appropriate Washington Administrative Code (WAC) rules and Revised Code of Washington (RCW) laws.
  • Prioritizes and schedules the plan reviews for all of the facilities that are assigned by your supervisor.
  • Processes and builds a site-specific worksheet outlining the general score of the project, the electrical loads being added, and the potential permit fees associated with the proposed installation.

Project specific customer communication and assistance

  • Communicates with inspectors, field supervisors, contractors, engineers and the general public about plans and specifications to resolve plan review questions, issues and problems within facilities and/or projects assigned to the reviewer.
  • Assists field inspectors with electrical inspections on complex facilities that have been through the plan review process.
  • Conducts other complex inspections that need central office assistance.

Communicate and instruct general plan review processes

  • Provides instructional materials and forms to customers to explain and clarify plan review requirements.
  • Provides assistance and/or training to electrical inspectors on load calculations and code requirements specific to complex electrical systems associated with health care occupancies, correctional institutions, and school campuses.

Program Support

  • Assists in processing electrical plan reviews in and out of the unit, payment notifications, and ensures that distribution of the plans occurs.
  • Performs virtual inspections to cover schedule demands or in place of absent inspectors.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Requires completion of the Electrical Construction Inspector 1 requirements and successful completion of the required in-training program and one year as an Electrical Construction Inspector 2.

As well as:

Must possess a valid unrestricted driver's license to travel to inspection sites.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstration of position-specific skills, abilities and competencies, including:

  • Possession of a valid Washington State General Electrical Administrator's certificate (AD01) or a valid Master General Electrician (ME01) certificate.
  • Demonstrated experience in a cross-section of electrical work in the electrical construction industry.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints of electrical installations, interpret and apply electrical codes, compute electrical loads, and able to apply experience with standard practices, terminology, methods, materials, and tools of the electrical design and installation trades.

    Ability to recognize the layout, operation, and hazards of electrical installations.

  • Computer skills with an emphasis on Microsoft products, use of VISIO and Blue Beam Software; familiar with Box.com.
  • Demonstration of position-specific skills, abilities and competencies:
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well l as the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working on projects and implementing successful change management and technology strategies.
  • Ability to use established work procedures and innovative approaches to complete assignments.
    1. Ability to read and interpret electrical plans.
    2. Skills and ability to safely and accurately operate and understand basic electrical testing equipment.
    3. Ability to maintain highest levels of confidentiality at all times.
