Summary

This job involves working as a legal secretary in the Michigan Attorney General's office, supporting the corrections division by preparing legal documents like pleadings, briefs, and subpoenas, as well as organizing electronic case files.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • For Legal Secretary 7: Two years of administrative support experience with PC use for correspondence and data management, including one year at a 6-level equivalent
  • For Legal Secretary 8: Three years of administrative support experience with PC use, including one year in legal secretarial practices equivalent to Legal Secretary 7
  • For Legal Secretary 9: Four years of office experience in administrative support, including two years in legal secretarial practices equivalent to Legal Secretary 7 or one year equivalent to Legal Secretary 8
  • Proficiency in legal terminology, formatting, and procedures for preparing documents
  • Skills in docketing, maintaining, and organizing electronic case files
  • Some positions may require stenographic skills

Full Job Description




This position provides legal secretary duties for the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) division within the Attorney General. Duties include: preparation of legal pleadings, briefs, letters and memoranda utilizing legal secretarial terminology, practices and procedures, format, form and spelling. Preparation of appearances, notices, subpoenas, affidavits of service, etc. docketing and maintaining/organizing electronic case files. This position may also provide back-up support to the Division Chief and Division Head Secretary as directed.

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Legal Secretary 7

Two years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including one year equivalent to 6-level administrative support experience.

Legal Secretary E8

Three years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including one year involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Secretary 7.

Legal Secretary 9

Four years of office experience involving administrative support practices, including two years involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Secretary 7 or one year equivalent to a Legal SecretaryE8.
