Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting lawyers in a U.S. Attorney's Office by handling paperwork, organizing case files, preparing for court, and managing schedules and travel.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 level, such as maintaining case records, assisting with trial prep, using legal research tools, and drafting legal documents
  • OR a Master's degree or equivalent in a related field like Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, or Law
  • OR two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a related degree
  • OR a combination of graduate education (beyond one year) and relevant experience
  • Proficiency in automated legal research tools and public databases
  • Strong skills in proofreading, cite checking, and editing legal documents
  • Ability to use software for trial presentations and courtroom assistance
  • Experience managing calendars, tracking case dates, and arranging travel

GS-09: To be eligible you must have: at least one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-7 level; or Education, or a Combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: is defined as one full year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service: Performing routine litigation support assignments such as maintaining accurate and current records of electronic or physical case materials; assisting attorneys in preparing for court and/or preparing computerized trial presentations; using automated legal research tools as well as public information databases to perform basic research of case-specific legal matters; preparing, drafting, or editing a variety of legal documents.

OR Education: one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Law): Master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B.

or J.D., if related.

Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Major Duties:

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for directly and independently providing a wide range of legal support services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Southern District of Illinois.

Typical work assignments will include: Examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents. Proofreading and cite checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents.

Providing automated assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and assisting with courtroom presentations using various software applications and graphics hardware.

Assisting in the receipt, evaluation, production, and presentation of discovery. Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.

Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases; Tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conference and interviews.

Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
