WABON – Legal
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Lead Paralegal to support our mission to protect and improve the health of people in Washington State by delivering high-quality legal services to the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON).
Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Manager, this position provides lead directions to paralegals and legal assistants while performing advanced, complex paralegal work in support of nursing regulation and public protection.
WABON safeguards public health and safety by regulating the competency and quality of licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, advanced registered nurse practitioners, and nursing technicians.
This role plays a critical part in ensuring legal processes are accurate, timely, and aligned with statutory and administrative requirements.
Key Responsibilities Include
Leadership & Oversight
Assigns, reviews, and evaluates paralegal and legal assistant work.
Provides training, mentorship, and guidance to ensure consistency and quality of legal support services.
Legal Document Management
Composes, analyzes, reviews, and routes complex legal documents.
Associates pleadings and legal materials with appropriate legal, hearing, and compliance files.
Ensures accuracy, completeness, and procedural compliance of legal documentation.
Case & Deadline Tracking
Tracks statutory and administrative timelines for service of documents, responses, settlements, and hearings.
Maintains case status updates and ensures attorneys are informed of key milestones.
Utilizes legal databases to manage pleadings, evidence, and case documentation.
Regulatory Support
Supports disciplinary and compliance processes in alignment with nursing practice laws and standards. Coordinates with attorneys and internal stakeholders to advance cases efficiently and accurately.

Required Qualifications

Option 1: Two years' experience as a Paralegal 2.
Option 2: Six (6) years as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary) in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge, or review judge.
Option 3: An Associate’s degree that includes coursework in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field AND Four (4) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary)
Option 4: A Bachelor’s degree that includes paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field AND Two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary)
