Job Description

Summary

This job involves coordinating with law enforcement agencies to improve public safety and handling public communications, such as writing press releases and interacting with the media, for the U.S.

Attorney's Office in northern Indiana. It combines project planning to prevent crime with public affairs duties to inform the community and news outlets.

The United States Attorney's Office, Northern District of Indiana is soliciting applications for a Law Enforcement Coordination Specialist/Public Affairs Officer.

This position is located at one of our three branches; Fort Wayne, Hammond or South Bend.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet the Specialized Experience criteria, Education, or a Combination of Education and Specialized Experience criteria.

Resumes must include specific example(s) that support qualifications for the below-referenced criteria: Specialized experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level.

Specialized experience is defined as: effectively communicating and working together with federal and municipal/county law enforcement representatives or agencies that are external to the agency; developing written project/program plans and milestones/deliverables to prevent crime or improve public safety; and writing press releases or other public awareness materials.

OR Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Public Affairs, Communications, Organizational Leadership): a Ph.D.

or equivalent doctorate degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university, and resumes must demonstrate how the education provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level.

The Law Enforcement Coordination Specialist and Public Affairs Officer is responsible for leading, promoting, and advising on information sharing, coordination, and USAO partnerships with and between law enforcement and other public safety agencies and officials.

The specialist is also responsible for administering media relations and other public affairs activities within the district.

Typical work assignments for this position include: Developing, implementing, and coordinating strategies to address information sharing and USAO partnership needs, challenges, and concerns.

Serving as the USAO's primary day-to-day liaison to/for law enforcement agencies, which involves maintaining extensive contacts across the district and participating in meetings.

Providing authoritative advice and guidance to the United States Attorney and others at the USAO on law enforcement engagement, partnerships, and communication approaches to emerging issues and concerns.

Working in conjunction with the District's Executive Staff to plan and implement USAO initiatives, programs, and strategies.

Planning and facilitating the dissemination of detailed and complex information, including providing detailed explanations and clarifications to address negative comments about litigative activities, law enforcement operations, and USAO/DOJ priorities/strategic initiatives.

Plans, coordinates, and facilitates meetings, working groups, training, and other activities, often in coordination and collaboration with law enforcement and other public safety agencies, including coordinating attendance and logistics.

Compiling, organizing, and developing written information (e.g., plans, program materials, briefing materials, presentations).

Planning, directing, and executing public information campaigns using news releases, press conferences, factsheets, brochures, graphics, and other public awareness materials.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the local and national news media, serving as the USAO's primary point-of-contact for inquiries.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. This is a developmental position targeted to a full performance level of GS-12.

The incumbent of this position will be provided with additional supervision and guidance while developing toward the full performance level.

This level of supervision and guidance will lessen as the incumbent progresses.
