This job involves leading a team of land surveyors at the Michigan Department of Transportation to improve surveying methods and technologies across the state, focusing on innovation, training, and efficiency in infrastructure projects.
It suits experienced surveyors who enjoy managing people, researching new tools, and collaborating with others to solve big-picture problems in transportation.
You'll make decisions on legal surveying issues and help ensure safer, more effective road and bridge systems for Michigan.

Would you like to take your land surveying expertise beyond day-to-day project work and make a statewide impact supporting the infrastructure that keeps Michigan moving? Do you enjoy innovation, leadership and continuous improvement?
This position at the Mihcigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) offers a rare opportunity to shape how surveying is performed across the entire department.
As the supervising land surveyor for the Survey Support Section, you will lead a highly specialized team responsible for advancing survey methods, technology and best practices statewide.
You’ll play a critical role in modernizing survey operations, managing the development and implementation of tools that automate survey processes and asset collection to improve efficiency, effectiveness and safety.
From incorporating the latest surveying technologies into construction activities to leading pilot projects that test new equipment and software, you will help position MDOT at the forefront of innovation.
Rather than focusing on a single region, this role influences survey practices department-wide.
You will provide training to staff across Michigan in the use of surveying hardware and software, supporting quality assurance efforts to ensure survey deliverables meet established standards and serving as the final authority on all legal matters relating to land surveying within MDOT.
As a leader at MDOT, you’ll collaborate with professionals across regions, technical disciplines and experience levels.
If you enjoy mentoring others, researching emerging technologies, solving complex problems and building strong working relationships, this role will allow you to serve the entire organization while strengthening statewide consistency.
At its core, this position is about leadership, service, and progress, guiding the evolution of MDOT’s survey practices, supporting staff and consultants, and helping deliver a safer, more efficient transportation system for Michigan.
