Key Requirements

  • Capability to load recyclable materials into trucks and sort/compress items for recycling
  • Availability for Monday-Friday shifts (6am-2:30pm or 9am-5:30pm) with possible overtime, holidays, and weekends
  • Adherence to safety procedures in dusty, dirty environments with exposure to weather and hazards

Full Job Description

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Superintendent Senate Office Buildings, Day Labor and Custodial Section Operations Unit.

The AOC is seeking an efficient Laborer (Recycler) working leader to provide work instructions to other employees and perform the same type of work that is being led.

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position.

- Ability to lead people in the performance of laborer/recycler work Major Duties:

Tour of duty: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. or Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Work schedule may require some occasionally mandatory overtime and holidays AND weekends.

The Laborer (Recycler) Leader is required to perform the same type of duties as the employees being led. Leading: Serves as a working leader of three

or more employees in accomplishing day custodial/laborer/ recycling or special events work.

Passes instructions on to other workers received from supervisor by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led.

Ensures that needed plans, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Checks employees work in progress and when finished.

Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.

Laborer General Functions: Performs laborer work, including loading and unloading trucks, and using various moving equipment and devices including forklifts, hand and power lifts, and pallet jacks, and carts for construction debris.

Loads recyclable materials into designated vehicles including recycle truck, trash removal truck, stake-bed truck, dump truck, pick-up truck, and van truck.

Assists trade shops to set up scaffolding, ladders, and carry equipment, materials and tools to work site for construction or renovation. Cleans interior and exterior areas assigned.

Demonstrates proper work methods and answer workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, Ensures that floors and hallways are washed and buffed; that tables, dressers, desks, radiators, light fixtures, fans, refrigerators, and other furnishings are maintained, dusted and cleaned.

Ensures that rest rooms are cleaned and supplied with towels and toilet paper; that ashtrays and trash containers are emptied, and that windows and mirrors are washed.

Special Functions: Reports any shortages of supplies or cleaning equipment. Removes and perform furniture or equipment relocation and set-up for special events.

Arranges chairs and tables in required configurations for special events and ceremonies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Conditions: Work requires extremely heavy physical effort on a continuous basis to lift and carry boxes and items that weigh 80 to 100 pounds and more with assistance, and to lift and carry items and similar weights in cramped work areas.

Incumbent uses heavy physical effort to load and sort materials by category, and work to compress and assemble bales of materials which requires standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring positions, and lifting and carrying items.

Lifts and moves bales and boxes of objects that weigh up to 80 pounds, and to uses pallet jacks to move bales of materials.

Working Conditions: Incumbent performs work inside and outside, with exposure to all weather conditions.

Works around recycling and baling machine areas, loading docks and warehouses with dust and dirt.

Work involves exposure to bruises and serious cuts, requiring safety procedures and protective safety equipment.
