Requirements

In this position, you will play a crucial role in supporting the identification of invasive insect survey samples for various entomology programs. Your responsibilities will include utilizing a microscope and taxonomic keys to accurately identify insects from a range of samples, ensuring precise classification. Additionally, you will be tasked with pinning and curating insect specimens for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's insect reference collection, which is vital for ongoing research and monitoring efforts. You will also enter data from these samples into the necessary databases, maintaining meticulous records that contribute to the overall integrity of the program. Furthermore, you will assist the entomology staff in managing survey equipment, ensuring that all tools are properly maintained and ready for use. It will be essential to keep a detailed laboratory log of your activities to track progress and findings. Lastly, you may be required to undertake other entomology-related duties as needed, contributing to the broader goals of the team and enhancing your own expertise in the field.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Temporary, full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

• Experience working in a laboratory.
• Experience performing or working with one of the following items:
  • Microscope
  • Taxonomic keys
  • Identifying insects
  • Pin or curate insect specimens
  • Enter data from samples
  • Set up and monitor insect survey traps
  • Maintain laboratory log
  • Determine difference between target and non-target organisms
  • Determine difference between common biota in samples and rare biota
  • Proper preparation of insect specimens
