This job involves working directly with troubled and high-risk youth in a juvenile justice setting, providing supervision, mentoring, and crisis intervention to help them develop positive behaviors and skills for a better future.
You'll handle daily activities, teach life skills, and ensure safety in a structured environment.

Mentoring, oversee and work closely with high risk/violent youth offendersScheduling and provide supervision of individual and group activitiesWriting court reports, parole summaries, treatment plans, and supervision standardsAssisting with teaching a variety of pro-social, academic and vocational skillsImplementing specialized treatment plansCo-facilitating individual, family or group sessions with a Licensed Mental Health PractitionerPass the Integrated Crisis Response (ICR) intervention program within 90 days of employment.
Provide crisis intervention when necessaryResolving potentially dangerous situations to ensure the safety of staff, clients or the publicCommunicating information and ideas clearly and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writingSpeaking clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally Our TeamEmployees within Juvenile Justice Youth Services have an opportunity to see the impacts that their hard work and dedication does for the well-being of today's youth.

The ideal Youth Development Specialist hasFour years of paid working experience with troubled or at-risk youth, four years of full-time education or a combination of education and experience to equal four years.PreferenceMay be given to candidates who are 21 years of age or olderMay be given to candidates who have a high school diploma or GEDQualifying work experience: Paid work at any JJYS facility, Utah State Hospital, Utah State Developmental Center, private residential youth programs, alternative schools, juvenile probation/parole, or programs that work with at-risk or delinquent youths.
Non-qualifying work experience: Volunteer work with youth, unpaid experience or work in the adult correctional field does not qualify for work experience.
Law enforcement experience may only be considered if you were assigned to work as a juvenile crime officer, a school resource officer or a DARE officer.
Supplemental InformationHigh risks in this job include physical intervention with clients in order to de-escalate hostile or volatile situations.
