Summary

This internship involves working mostly in the field to collect and update data on road features like traffic signals and drainage systems using GPS tools and smartphones, while also helping maintain a database and joining team meetings.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform field work, including walking on uneven surfaces and working near roadways with safety practices
  • Proficiency with Windows OS, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, iPhone, and laptop for data collection and organization
  • Strong communication skills to update team on data collection status and participate in weekly meetings

Full Job Description

Hennepin County Transportation Asset Management division is seeking two Interns to join our team. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience in areas related to civil engineering, roadway asset management, and public works.

Location and hours:

These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at various job sites and remote as job duties require.

On site meetings and field work start location will be at the Hennepin County Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility.

These positions will start in May or early June and last for 3 months with the possibility to extend up to 6 months. Start and end dates will be determined after the candidates have been selected.

Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Friday 6 - 10 a.m.

While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside or relocate in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

These positions are full-time, limited duration, non-benefit earning internships.

These positions are internally classified as an Intern II.

In these internships you will:

  • Work majority of the time in the field following established guidelines to assist with data collection of roadway assets (traffic signals, retaining walls, catch basins, culverts, etc.).
  • Gather a variety of field data with GPS technology or an iPhone, including asset location, photos, measurements and asset attributes, to ensure the asset database is up to date.
  • Assist with roadway asset database maintenance.
  • Organize and quality check collected data.
  • Communicate continually the status of data collection to other team members.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings.
  • Use Windows operating system, Microsoft Edge, and Google Chrome internet browsers, an iPhone and laptop.
  • Follow best practices in safety when working near the roadway.


Need to have:

  • Must be in one of the following:
    • Current enrollment in a vocational/technical, associate, or undergraduate program in engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies, or another related field.
    • Recent graduate (within 12 months) in a vocational/technical, associate, or undergraduate program in engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies, or another related field.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel around Hennepin County to conduct field work and attend meetings is required.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain, bend, and stoop, and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Access to reliable internet access and self-supported hybrid office space.

Nice to have:

  • Experience:
    • Using Windows operating system, Microsoft Edge, and Google Chrome internet browsers, an iPhone and laptop.
    • Troubleshooting basic computer issues.
    • With data collection.
    • Working with datasets.
    • Working with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint), ArcGIS Online, ArcMap (GIS), GPS Technology, Microstation/AutoCAD, ESRI Field Maps, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Knowledge of:
    • Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
    • Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, using all types of communication methods including in person, via email, Microsoft Teams or phone.
    • Work independently and in a team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills.
