The VA New Jersey Healthcare system is currently recruiting for multiple Health Technician Positions located within our Community Living Center at our Lyons Campus.

The Health Technician performs a range of clerical, technical, administrative, patient care, and general clinic support functions within a general acute care setting.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-06: Specialized Experience: Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: Support healthcare professionals by providing routine care, addressing physical, social, and spiritual well-being with a focus on preventing skin breakdown, implementing rehabilitative measures, and ensuring safety.

This includes assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADL). Use diagnostic instruments and equipment, including Electrocardiogram, Spirometry, Bladder Scans, and Glucometer.

Perform venipuncture to ensure proper collection, labeling, handling, and delivery to the lab.

Perform one-on-one observation and report changes in patient condition, behavior, and/or vital signs promptly to the Registered Nurse.

Use the electronic medical record (EMR) to complete administrative tasks by gathering and documenting medical history on admitted patients, inputting progress notes at the time of treatment/procedure, maintaining records on specimens, and coordinating appointments with other services.

Provide equipment maintenance. NOTE: Such experience MUST be well represented in resume. Failure to do so will results in a Non-Qualification Determination.

OR Education: Must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education directly related to the position with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position.

Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Major Duties:

Clinical Activities: The incumbent operates and supports providers and Registered Nurses in designated clinical area using diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments/equipment including Electrocardiogram, Spirometry, Visual Acuity Screening, and Bladder scan according to established procedures and with documented competency.

Locates and sets up equipment needed for complex diagnostic procedures. Operates, calibrates, and maintains medical instruments and equipment.

Serves as a unit resource for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of non-critical, semi-critical, and critical Reusable Medical Devices.

Gathers screening data on patients admitted to the hospital to include fall risk, allergies, current medications, homelessness, abuse, means and mode of arrival, danger to self or others, and exposure to communicable diseases.

Recognizes and informs appropriate multidisciplinary health care team of deviations from baseline screening parameters. Performs phlebotomy in designated areas.

Performs 1:1 patient observation according to policy. Assists nurses and physicians in the care and treatment of critically ill and emergent patients.

Performs standardized treatment procedures requiring considerable training and experience such as performing pharyngeal suctions, setting up and regulating the flow of oxygen, or analyzing pulmonary waveforms, application of basic orthopedic splints.

Care and treatment of patients with acute and chronic mental health conditions.

Personal Patient Care: The incumbent performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient including transporting patients via wheelchair or gurney, and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance to various areas within the hospital including clinics, diagnostic areas, and treatment areas.

Performs simple personal care duties such as bathing and demonstrates nursing standards for patient hygiene including bathing, oral, nail, and hair care.

Assist patients with toileting needs, providing incontinent care.

Perform basic nursing care that requires knowledge of standardized procedures such as performance of active/passive range-of-motion activities, ensuring that catheters and oxygen cannula are maintained intact, etc.

Administrative Duties: The incumbent schedules procedures, provider evaluations, and coordinates appointments with other services.

Perform administrative tasks and manage medical support functions for clinic or practice, such as maintaining control records for specimens and tests and documenting measurements taken.

Documents treatments and procedures that they have conducted in the electronic medical record.

Orders and maintains specialized supplies needed for equipment and instruments used in assigned unit Performs other duties as assigned.
