Full Job Description

The full performance, Emergency Department (ED) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

This position serves as an advanced technician for the ED for patients who are present for treatment.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/10/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Prior medical/hospital experience with prior medical military or corpsman training.

Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition; Responds to medical emergencies as a part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue team, or medical transport team; Sets up equipment and surgical instrumentation and Performs observation-based screening and collection of patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel.

OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) meets the requirements for GS-7 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

Major Duties:

Duties of the position include but not limited to: Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition. Provides geriatric-specific care.

Performs Patient Transport with or without cardiac monitor. Administration of medication.

Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations.

Responds to medical emergencies as a part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue team, or medical transport team Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS), use of automatic external defibrillator, and assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway.

Performs Cardiovascular monitoring to include: providing support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry. Recognizing lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e.

ventricular fibrillation and asystole) and immediately notifies appropriate staff. \ Collects specimens. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting.

Sets up equipment and surgical instrumentation. Performs Vital Signs and Point of Care Testing. Operates specialized medical equipment and assists with patient exams and screenings.

Performs observation-based screening and collection of patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel.

Performs measurements of PR, QRS, QT, RR, and QTC intervals, interprets rhythm, and prints rhythm strip.

Obtaining patient health history for chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status.
