Job Description

Summary

This job is for the top leader of a maximum-security prison in Iowa, where you'll manage daily operations, handle all staff hiring, training, and discipline, and create policies to keep the facility safe and fair for inmates.

It's ideal for someone with strong leadership skills and experience running correctional or similar facilities, who can work well with teams inside and outside the prison.

You'll need to balance security with humane treatment while dealing with complex personnel and stakeholder issues.

Key Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Equivalent of five years full-time management experience in correctional, mental health, intellectual disability, juvenile correctional, or training facilities
  • Ability to serve as appointing authority for personnel activities including recruitment, training, and discipline
  • Experience developing comprehensive policies for safe and humane environments
  • Skills in maintaining collaborative relations with internal and external stakeholders
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience allowed, such as substituting up to four years of relevant work for education or up to two years of graduate coursework in related fields for experience
  • Authorization to work in the United States, verified through E-Verify

Full Job Description

As the Executive Leader and Warden of the Iowa State Penitentiary, this position oversees the operations of a maximum-security correctional program.
The role serves as the appointing authority for the institution, managing all personnel activities including recruitment, training, and disciplinary matters.
Additionally, the Warden ensures a safe and humane environment by developing comprehensive policies and maintaining collaborative relations with internal and external stakeholders.

Within the required timeframe, new hires will be verified through the E-Verify system to ensure authorization to work in the United States.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university and the equivalent of five years of full-time management experience in a correctional, mental health, intellectual disability or juvenile correctional or training facility;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year of the above type full-time work experience for each year of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year (twenty-four semester or equivalent hours) of graduate level course work in penology, the social/behavioral sciences, business administration or public administration, for each year of the required full-time experience to a maximum substitution of two years.
