The Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Correctional Health System is seeking to fill Institutional Nurse vacancies, (per diem positions only) throughout multiple locations of Riverside County for our correctional facilities. An updated resume must be uploaded at time of application in order to be considered for any positions. All candidates will need to pass a Sheriff's Background.

Required Licenses & Certifications:
  • A current and valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • A current and valid Basic Life Support, (BLS), certification, issued by the American Heart Association.

Schedule: 7/12s bi-weekly. Hours to be determined by the department

Under direction, and in accordance with the State of California Nursing Practice Act, provides professional nursing care for individuals detained at a Riverside County Sheriff/Probation confinement or correctional facility; administers treatment and medications as directed; assists physicians and carries out their orders; and performs other related duties as required.

The Institutional Nurse - Per Diem reports to either a Senior Institutional Nurse or a Supervising Institutional Nurse and is the advanced journey level classification for registered nurses who have advanced knowledge and skills in providing routine and emergency nursing services in a correctional/institutional setting. Incumbents are assigned to the Riverside University Health System - Correctional Health Services (RUHS-CHS) and perform the entire range of professional nursing duties with minimal assistance or supervision from other medical personnel. The Institutional Nurse - Per Diem is distinguished from the Supervising Institutional Nurse in that the latter supervises a number of professional nurses and has charge of a nursing program, which may encompass more than one correctional facility.

Requirements

Examples of Essential Duties (may include but not limited to)

• Within the full scope of the Nursing Practice Act, assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with physician instructions; make preliminary observations of, and prepare patients for, medical treatment.

• Assist physicians and other healthcare providers in administering treatments and in performing medical examinations, diagnostic tests, and surgical operations.

• As directed, administer or dispense prescribed treatment and medications to patients; chart treatment and dispensing to patients, and record and report significant changes in condition and general progress of patient.

• Counsel and advise patients, families and significant others regarding special medical problems and/or proper healthcare methods.

• Prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; instruct patients in carrying out physicians' orders; may transcribe physicians' orders to working records.

• May provide orientation and training to new staff, residents, medical students, and nursing students.

• May participate in quality assurance reviews; may act as a team leader or relief charge nurse.

• Assign and monitor the work of subordinate nursing personnel; participate in committee activities; identify staff training needs.

• May testify in court as to the client's mental and physical condition; may recommend initiating conservatorship investigations when assigned to the mental health setting.

Qualifications

INSTITUTIONAL NURSE - PER DIEM

Education: Successful completion of the education required by the State of California to obtain a valid license and certification.

Experience: Four years of full-time experience as a registered nurse in an acute care facility, mental health facility, or correctional healthcare facility with references and evaluations to show appropriate skill level. (A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or National Certification in a nursing specialty may be considered in lieu of one year of the experience. A master's degree in nursing may be considered in lieu of two years of the experience.)

Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques, and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology and patient care routine appropriate to clinical setting; medical instruments and equipment; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; community resources available to provide patient care and follow-up; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing professional aspects of nursing.

Ability to: Perform the full range of nursing duties and responsibilities; plan and organize nursing plans for patients; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients and co-workers; secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together; assist in the instruction of entry-level nurses and ancillary personnel; keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization; evaluate the medical records of hospital admissions; make recommendations regarding continued stay necessity; identify discharge needs.


Other Requirements
License/Certificate: Must possess and maintain a current, valid license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of California.

Possession of valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificates issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required.

Must maintain a Sheriff's Security Clearance for access to all correctional facilities.


Pre-Employment
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment.)


Probationary Period as an Approved Local Merit System, all County of Riverside employees, except those serving "At Will," are subject to the probationary period provisions as specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, County Resolution, or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head.
