Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems and related utility equipment at a U.S.

Army base in Kansas, often while operating or handling motor vehicles as part of the role.

Workers will install, fix, and service refrigeration units and machinery using tools like torches and gauges, working in challenging indoor and outdoor environments.

It's a good fit for hands-on technicians with practical experience in HVAC repair who can handle physical demands and work under some supervision.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform installation and repair of HVAC units and utility systems without more than normal supervision (WG-10 level)
  • Certificate for handling refrigerants (required for WG-10; must upload proof)
  • Knowledge of electrical and plumbing methods and techniques
  • Experience using specialized tools such as acetylene torch, ammeters, refrigeration gauges, vacuum pumps, and hydraulic presses
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, work in cramped or elevated spaces, and endure uncomfortable positions
  • Willingness to work indoors/outdoors in hazardous conditions including exposure to fumes, noise, and temperature extremes

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Serve as an Industrial Equipment Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) for the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Riley, KS.

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

WG- 10 Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Industrial Equipment Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision.

I have the ability to perform common installation and repair of refrigeration/heating, air conditioning ventilation (HVAC) units and utility systems equipment and machinery or I have received training in electrical and plumbing methods and techniques and using special tools such as an acetylene torch, ammeters, refrigeration gauges, electronic leak detector, control devices, vacuum pump, hydraulic press, micrometers, levels, plumb bobs, dividers, gauges/meters, drain cleaning devices, and hydrostatic pumps and torches.

I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position requires you to possess and maintain a certificate for handling refrigerants to qualify for WG-10.

Note: you must upload the certification to meet the requirement for the WG-10 position.

WG- 08 Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Industrial Equipment Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision.

I have the ability to perform common repair of refrigeration and heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) units.

I utilize electrical and/or plumbing methods and techniques to perform maintenance on utility systems equipment and/or machinery.

I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance.

Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach.

Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods.

In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment. Working Conditions: The employee works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas.

Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when these is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases, fumes, or acids.

Subject to possible burns from refrigerants.

Works near moving parts of equipment and machinery, energized electrical circuits, sharp metal edges, loud noises, and toxic fumes, which could cause cuts, burns, and respiratory ailments.

May be subject to sudden and frequent temperature changes. May be required to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, ear protection and hard hats. Major Duties:

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning units, large systems, and supporting equipment.
  • Determines causes of defects and malfunctions on assigned refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment, and of power boilers and equipment.
  • Determines repairs needed and repairs, adjusts, and replaces parts.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and modifies water supply, sewage disposal, oil and gas lines, and similar utility systems and equipment.
  • Responsible for the proper handling of specific hazardous waste generated by the unit, activity or facility; operation of hazardous waste generation point and supervising or assisting in emergency action involving hazardous wastes.
