Summary
This entry-level engineering role at the South Carolina Department of Transportation involves designing simple drainage systems for roads and bridges, such as pipes, ditches, and erosion controls, while using basic computer models and calculations to manage water flow.
It suits recent graduates or early-career professionals with a degree in engineering or a related field who enjoy hands-on technical work and are willing to learn about environmental regulations.
The job requires occasional fieldwork in varied conditions, making it ideal for those comfortable with travel and outdoor tasks.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management (or approved equivalence)
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license
- Ability to perform simple pipe design and drainage calculations using methods like the Rational Method
- Proficiency in developing basic computer models for hydraulic analyses
- Knowledge of sediment and erosion control device design
- Familiarity with NPDES permitting requirements and interpreting road plans
- Physical ability to handle extended desk work, fieldwork on rough terrain, and occasional travel or emergency response
Full Job Description
In the Upstate Regional Production Group, performs simple pipe design for drainage projects. Develops basic computer models for bridge hydraulic analyses. Delineates drainage areas; determine time of concentration, land usage, and "C" values for drainage projects using the Rational Method. Performs ditch design calculations for capacity and stability. Uses USGS regression equations to determine flow rates for given large drainage areas. Calculates pre and post development flow rates. Designs sediment and erosion control devices, including sediment dams, ditch liners, and inlet structure filters. Becomes familiar with NPDES and permitting requirements. Understands and interprets a simple set of road plans. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations. Additional Information
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is committed to a diverse workforce and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.
