The HVAC Technician III is an expert in HVAC, and is responsible for the most complex technical challenges and the strategic oversight of HVAC systems, projects, and personnel. Operates with unparalleled technical expertise and total accountability for the reliability and efficiency of the entire system. Focuses on high-level problem-solving, project management, long-term system health, and advanced training/mentoring of all lower-level staff. Makes high-level technical and operational decisions, and is guided by a comprehensive mastery of building codes, engineering best practices, and security protocols. Provides vocational training to inmates regarding the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems. This job is subject to 24-hour availability.

Position may be filled as an HVAC Technician II (Starting salary $26.00 - $41.50) or a HVAC Technician I (Starting salary $20.00 - $32.00), upon the review of the qualifications of the applicant.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):
  • 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those who have other medical insurance coverage.
  • 5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage.
  • 2 vision plan options under EyeMed
Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):
  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
  • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Paid Time Off:
  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
We have 12 paid holidays.

Requirements

  • Administers programs for the training of operators and mechanics in preventative maintenance techniques, equipment performance standards, operating limits and safety procedures to be used for various types of equipment.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and resource to provide information to determine the most effective way of meeting the needs of management, staff, clients, or customers.
  • Assists, mentors and trains team members.
  • Make recommendations for the prioritization of funds, implement budget(s) for service delivery, track allocations and expenditures and evaluate field results to provide feedback for reprioritization as needed.
  • Builds, fabricates, or repairs structures, equipment, and/or miscellaneous articles from verbal instructions, blueprints and/or working drawings.

Qualifications

(includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon entry into position and trainable after entry into position)
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.

Additional Information

  • Certified to handle coolants, refrigerants, and other like chemicals.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
