Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating medium-sized equipment like dump trucks and rollers to maintain highways, performing hands-on tasks such as patching roads with asphalt, digging ditches, and cleaning up litter, and directing traffic to keep everyone safe during repairs.

It's a physically demanding role that requires working outdoors in all weather, including during emergencies or bad weather with possible long shifts.

A good fit would be someone with basic experience in manual labor or equipment operation who is reliable, physically fit, and comfortable getting a commercial driver's license.

Full Job Description

Operates medium duty equipment such as a tandem dump truck hauling materials to and form job sites. Operates medium duty equipment such as a large roller > 4 tons. Performs manual labor on highways and shoulders while patching with asphalt, ditching roadside ditches, cleaning and opening ends of pipes, loading/unloading materials, supplies, and equipment. Flags traffic during road repair and ditching operations to control the flow of traffic, to protect workers, general and traveling public, and equipment. Removes litter and dead animals from the R/W. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
