Full Job Description

Serves as a Crane Operator on a Bridge Maintenance Crew. Responsible for the daily operation, various maintenance reports, and maintenance of the crane. This includes the performance of pile driving while using all necessary attachments to perform this task. Performs duties as a certified crane operator during the construction and repair of bridges throughout District 3. Completes job hazard analysis forms, mitigates risks, and conducts safety meeting prior to the commencement of work activities to inform the crew of the hazards associated with the work to be performed. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Performs a variety of bridge maintenance activities using medium equipment, such as skid steer. Performs skilled manual labor using complex saws, power tools, measuring devices and welders. Performs skilled manual labor and operates specialized equipment, such as truck crane, snooper truck, crane, mobile heavy crane, and boom truck. Supervises the assembly and disassembly of the crane for transporting to and from various job sites. Operates equipment during emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
