Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating heavy machinery to maintain highways, such as clearing vegetation, patching roads, and removing snow and ice, along with performing hands-on tasks like cutting trees and setting up safe work zones.

Full Job Description

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, slope mower, Mowermax, and front end loader in roadside and right-of-way vegetation management operations. Operates tandem and single-axle dump trucks pulling trailer-mounted patching machine and completing full-depth asphalt patching. Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on right-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway. May assist with directing mowing and right-of-way clearing operations. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
