The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking multiple seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker 2's to fill vacancies in Ellensburg, North Bend, & Snoqualmie Pass, WA.

The selected candidates will support the moving of traffic across I90 and the State of Washington.

They will perform a multitude of maintenance tasks on the highway to provide a safe travel way by maintaining State highways, roadside, infrastructure and right of way.

The selected candidates will perform highway and right of way maintenance work to ensure the safe, efficient movement of goods, services, and people.


What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water.

Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Workers will:

  • Perform snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well has hauling sand and gravel.
  • Operate 32,000 to 60,000 GVW dump truck with plow and sander units.
  • Loader operation on/along roadways and with stockpile sites during winter operations.
  • Establish temporary work zones, mobile work operations, traffic control devices, including Road warriors, portable electronic signs, flagging for all maintenance operations and roadway accidents.
  • Maintain drainage facilities including ditching, channels, and culverts, cross drains, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Repair guardrail, fence, signs, directional markers, delineation, and the removal of graffiti from structures and other highway facilities; accident scene clean up.
  • Operate front end loaders, dump trucks, truck/trailer combos, sweepers, mowers, vactors, excavators, pickups and other miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Litter removal, cleaning Rest Areas and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise

  • Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
Heavy Equipment Operations
  • Basic knowledge of operating and maintaining heavy equipment used for road maintenance such as front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, vactor, 26,000 -56,000 GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments.

Safety Awareness and Compliance

  • Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.

Technical and Administrative Proficiency

  • Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating. Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.

  • Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions and a CDL medical card, with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months after initial state employment.
  • A Washington State Flagging Card, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • A First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to travel in snow covered roads, ice, closed sections of roadway, and extreme winter weather.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Advanced Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise: Extensive experience performing maintenance activities.
  • Traffic Control Operations: Experience performing traffic control activities in compliance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards to ensure the safety of roadway workers and the traveling public.
  • Maintenance Manual Application: Skills and experience interpreting and applying the WSDOT Maintenance Manual to guide daily work activities, procedures, and operational decisions.
  • Snow and Ice Operations Implementation: Working knowledge of the WSDOT Snow and Ice Plan to safely and the ability to effectively conduct winter operations, including response, treatment strategies, and resource coordination.
  • Roadway Safety Standards Compliance: Proficiency interpreting and implementing M54-44 guidelines and MUTCD requirements to maintain consistent traffic control practices and roadway safety across maintenance and work zone activities.


Important Notes

  • This recruitment will be used to fill multiple seasonal vacancies in (1) North Bend, (2) Snoqualmie Pass & (1) Ellensburg; and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • In addition to the listed salary, positions located at Snoqualmie Pass, WA are eligible for an additional 10% Assignment pay and positions located in King County are eligible for an additional legislative approved 5% premium.
  • These positions are not eligible for remote work.
  • These seasonal work opportunities are expected to last from October through April.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
