The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Supervisor in our Northwest Region!

Under the direction of an Assistant Maintenance Superintendent, this position oversees work for the region wide plant establishment crew and the safety rest areas.

This position plans budgets, schedules, and supervises the work for these maintenance crews to ensure the movement of people and commerce.

This position leads by example and ensures their work units operate efficiently, effectively, and safely; and is critical in fostering an inclusive and healthy work environment that challenges all staff to be respectful and professional.

What to ExpectThis position makes decisions regarding day-to-day work activities based on labor, equipment, materials, and traffic control plan required to carry out work assignments.

Need supervisor approval when scheduling overtime and making purchases of goods and services.

It also assigns work to Highway Maintenance Worker 4 and/or 3, and by observation of assigned section needs.

Position interacts with Northwest Region staff and area maintenance staff, to include maintenance management, Highway Maintenance Supervisors, Highway Maintenance Workers 3, Maintenance Specialists, Highway Maintenance Workers 1 and 2; Traffic Management Center (TMC) and Incident Response Team (IRT); Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF); Region Landscape Architect Office and occasional interaction with other areas and Region crews.

Position also interacts with the public and outside entities, including Washington State Patrol (WSP), Department of Corrections (DOC Landscape Office provides the oversight and funding for Plant Establishment crew.

Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Nights, weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Plan, schedule, budget, and coordinate the work of the plant establishment and safety rest area crews; assist in determining maintenance needs and coordinate equipment, materials and personnel.
  • Guide and direct Highway Maintenance Worker 4’s and 3’s to accomplish routine and special maintenance projects.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor an annual vegetation management program, make recommendations.
  • Plan the layout of shrub beds, lawn area, and placement of trees and liners along assigned highways.
  • Oversee landscape maintenance and construction site restoration projects and day-to-day tasks.
  • Direct rest area building and grounds maintenance and repair.
  • Promote a safe work environment and identify safety improvement opportunities, ensuring crews adhere and follow all current and future safety protocols and policies and maintain diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Remain current on the Department’s Safety Program and attend safety training as required.
  • Investigate customer complaints from local citizens and the traveling public.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation: Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement and without air brakes restriction to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Crisis Communication and Situational Awareness: Demonstrated experience working and communicating in emergent/high stress situations while remaining professional, calm, composed, focused, aware of larger issues and concerns.
  • Collaborative Partnership Building: Demonstrated ability to cultivate and practice collaborative partnerships with internal and external customers to support the accomplishment of agency goals.
  • Independent Task Management: Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Safety Compliance and Equipment Operation: Demonstrated knowledge of safety standards, construction industry standards, and heavy equipment operation.
  • Communication Skills: Written, verbal, and presentation skills to effectively communicate information to diverse audiences, including those with non-technical backgrounds, in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Digital Proficiency: Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook; Cloud computing; virtual meeting software, such as MS Teams; and various system databases utilized for project tracking, and information and asset management.
  • Highway Maintenance Expertise: Have a sound background in all aspects of highway maintenance.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Take action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the above, the following are also required

  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse steep, rough, and uneven terrain.
  • Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.
  • Ability to work at heights above 25 feet over land or water.
  • Ability to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or part of a team.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Traffic Control and Work Zone Safety Compliance: Demonstrated ability to apply Washington State flagging standards to safely manage traffic control operations in roadway or work zone environments, ensuring compliance with established safety requirements.
  • Pesticide Application Compliance and Safety: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively apply pesticides in accordance with Washington State regulations, label requirements, and environmental protection standards.
  • Workforce Leadership and Team Development: Demonstrated ability to lead or supervise a diverse workforce by working across organizational boundaries; building and maintaining effective teams; coaching, mentoring, and training employees; and fostering employee engagement and inclusive work practices.
