Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating large military vehicles and heavy equipment in a defense depot in Texas, moving things like shipping containers, combat vehicles, and trailers across various terrains and weather conditions.

It requires physical strength and careful handling in tough outdoor environments, including lifting heavy items and dealing with heat, mud, and machinery hazards.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience driving big rigs or construction equipment who can work independently and follow safety rules without much oversight.

Key Requirements

Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job.

Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to Perform the Work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator Without More Than Normal Supervision (SOE): I perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as: Skill in operating heavy equipment used in movement of loaded/unloaded shipping containers, vehicles, and trailers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Work involves constant reaching, bending, turning, and movement of hands, feet, and arms.

The work is frequently in awkward and strained positions and requires climbing on and off vehicles.

Vehicle operations result in frequent jerks and jolts which exposes employees to bruises, cuts, and strains. Employee is required to lift up to 70 pounds.

If the item is heavier, assistance is requested or equipment is used. Working Conditions The work is typically outside and is subject to intense heat, cold, humidity, dirt, dust, grease, and fumes.

The temperature of bare metal during the summer months can cause serious burns to exposed skin.

During rainy weather, vehicles are often bogged down in mud and become slick, exposing the employee to falls and broken bones.

Care must be taken when opening vehicles in storage because of snakes or other critters which may be found inside. Major Duties:

  • Operates tracked and wheeled combat military vehicles throughout an active depot environment.
  • Drives vehicles over paved and unpaved surfaces, in all weather conditions, through a full range of driving conditions, to include heavy civilian traffic, stop lights, active rail crossings etc.
  • Positions vehicles within enclosed shop facilities or storage areas to close tolerances.
  • Follows all local, state and federal rules, regulations and procedures during operations.
  • Operates wheeled heavy tow tractor, caterpillar low speed crawler type tractor, truck tractor, wrecker or recovery vehicle for the purpose of moving heavy equipment such as combat vehicles, tactical vehicles, or other Class Seven equipment.
  • Moves subject equipment for the purpose of re-warehousing, transfer between processing and storage areas and to and from loading dock when received or shipped.
  • Operates bridge crane which travels the length of a 700 foot way, spans 120 feet and carries two 30 ton capacity lifting hooks with an adjustable center distance controlled by one operator.
