This job involves repairing and maintaining heavy vehicles, equipment, generators, and trailers at a veterans' hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi, under the supervision of a shop manager.
The role requires hands-on work with mechanical and electrical systems, often in challenging physical conditions.

This position is located within Facilities Management.
The work assignments and work scheduling will come from the GM Shop supervisor and the incumbent will establish projects, maintenance and repair of all mobile electric vehicles, heavy equipment, lawn mowing equipment, emergency power generators, fuel tanks and emergency management trailers assigned to them, (internally and externally) at this health care system.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Electrical Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Motor Vehicles Physical Strength and Agility Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods, with frequent bending, stretching, climbing, crawling and crouching; sometimes works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions; does strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting; frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools; often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device.
The two persons lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts. Working Condiitons: Work is performed both inside and outside.
When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, may sometimes work in bad weather.
Both inside and outside, is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground and works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy; frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment.
Is often exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants. Major Duties:
Repair work includes overhauling or rebuilding and other major repair of systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines; automatic and nonautomatic transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems; and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
Performs work on heavy vehicles and equipment such as heavy construction and earth moving vehicles; front end loaders, backhoes, and similar power shovels; mobile cranes; fuel dispensing trucks, which have hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical utility systems, controls, and features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses.
Troubleshooting and repair of commercial grade lawn equipment, street sweepers, skid steers and electric vehicles.
In repairing, overhauling, and rebuilding major assemblies, systems, and vehicles the incumbent traces and locates defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs; selects and complies with appropriate repair specifications and procedures; fits and installs parts such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to appropriate tolerances; makes changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines; and connects, meshes, aligns, and adjusts items and systems to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle.
The completed work typically must pass operating or mechanical performance tests. Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm; subject to change based on the needs of the facility.
