Summary

This job involves assisting surgeons in the operating room at a military hospital by preparing equipment, supporting procedures, and cleaning up afterward.

About the Position: This position is located at the Army Community Hospital, WINN, Fort Stewart, GA.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Requirement for Health Technician (Operating Room/Surgical): Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with the assembly of surgical equipment or instruments, assisting with surgical procedures, and preparing operating room post-surgery.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Provide support for surgical procedures ranging from routine to complex, high risk or trauma cases which includes positioning and sterile draping the patient and passing instruments during procedures.
  • Clean operating room after surgical procedure, determine appropriate method and perform decontamination, restock supplies, and maintain and file requisitions for inventory.
  • Select, assemble and organize required supplies for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference card and/or conferring with physician or charge nurse.
  • Conduct sponge, instrument, and sharp counts at appropriate times, measure blood/fluid loss, and receive and prepare specimens, following appropriate procedures for fresh/frozen disposition.
  • Orient and train new civilian and military employees, OR nursing students, and OR technologist students, explain surgical procedures, and explain use of surgical instruments and equipment, sterilization techniques, and aseptic procedures.
