Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing patient meal orders and menus in a hospital setting to ensure they meet nutritional needs, using software to track data and adjusting diets based on medical advice.

It also includes collecting patient health information and helping with nutrition counseling over the phone or in person.

About the Position: This position is with the Nutrition Care Division, Production and Service Branch located at Tripler Army Medical Center, on the Island of Oahu, HI.

Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) working in the food service industry in a hospital or clinic setting; 2) reviewing selective menus prepared for patients for conformance with diet orders; and 3) making menu adjustments directed by provider for therapeutic and basic nutritional needs.

OR Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Nursing Assistant, Nutrition, or Dietetics or related field of study.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Maintain control of inpatient meal orders and room service menus.
  • Input data into a nutrition software program.
  • Receive orders for early, late, and hold trays from ward staff to ensure all providers have proper meals for patient care.
  • Provide cross coverage in the Call Center as needed fielding patient diet calls.
  • Collect objective data from medical records including patient's diagnosis, laboratory test results, anthropometric measures, medical history, and medication.
  • Evaluate individual patient's understanding of nutrition counseling to assess their potential for compliance and ability to choose an adequate diet.
