About the Position: This Health Technician GS-0640-7 position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, MD.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing administrative functions to a medical treatment facility or hospital; performing basic patient care tasks such as measuring vital signs or obtaining general medical information; communicating with patients and clinicians about medical information; and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.

This specialized experience is equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Major Duties:

  • Conduct intake procedures: obtain general medical information, including allergies and drug sensitivities; and take and record vital signs.
  • Prepare patients for treatment to include moving or escorting patients to other treatment locations in the hospital.
  • Provide pretreatment, treatment and post treatment evaluation of patients. Assist patients as needed and provide for comfort and safety.
  • Draw blood, collect and prepare specimens. Initiate intravenous (IVs), regulate flow rate and monitor prescribed IV fluids.
  • Assist physician in performing specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Provide health care to a range of patients presenting with routine dysfunctions and/or disorders.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medication by oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular and intravascular routes.
  • Document patient's subjective/objective response to various medical interventions.
  • Ensure proper computer entry of patient data and equipment settings.
  • Monitor and ensure sufficient stock levels of medical supplies.
  • Prepare, assist, and support physicians during surgeries, biopsies, and excisions.
