Job Description

Summary

This entry-level health physicist role at a naval shipyard involves supporting radiation safety programs by analyzing data, investigating exposure incidents, and developing tools to monitor and control radiation doses for workers.

It focuses on ensuring safe handling of nuclear materials in ship repair and maintenance.

A good fit would be someone with a background in physics or related sciences, an interest in nuclear safety, and basic experience in applying regulations to real-world environments.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in health physics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, biology, or related field (meets Basic Requirements)
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 (for GS-07 level), including applying regulations from NRC, NAVSEA, BUMED, and federal/state sources
  • Knowledge of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Control Office, and Radiation Health Division functions
  • Understanding of principles of naval nuclear reactors, reactor systems, and health physics including math, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology
  • Experience compiling data, preparing reports, and performing analysis for radiological environments and dosimetry
  • Ability to investigate, resolve, and document dosimetry occurrences and perform dose assessments using mathematical modeling
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance for work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Virginia

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Health Physicist in the Radiation Health Division (105.5), Radiological Control Office (105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

GS-07 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and/or applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines.

Experience applying the fundamentals of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Control Office, and Radiation Health Division.

Experience applying the principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems.

Experience applying the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls, including associated disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.

Experience applying the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls, including associated disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.

  • You will assist in planning, directing, evaluating and writing procedures to accomplish the personnel exposure control program at the shipyard and satellite locations.
  • You will compile data and prepare reports to include comprehensive analysis of data conclusions regarding the radiological status of the environment.
  • You will investigate, resolve, document and review dosimetry occurrences.
  • You will perform analysis and evaluation for fleet dosimetry investigation and problems.
  • You will complete mathematical modeling for internal and external dose assessments.
  • You will present guidance and expertise on dosimetry placement for work evolutions involving high exposure to radiological engineering personnel.
  • You will develop, design, implement and maintain complex dosimetry processing instruments, associated software and procedures for various types of routine and un unusual occurrences.
