Full Job Description

The City of Detroit is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Grant Accountant (Temporary Opportunity) to join the Office of the Chief Financial Officer.

This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment and is ready to make an immediate impact supporting critical grant-funded programs.

This role will be responsible for managing the full lifecycle of grant funding, ensuring compliance with regulations, tracking expenditures, and preparing financial reports.

Key duties include budgeting, reconciling grant accounts, invoicing funding agencies, and managing audit preparation.

This role requires strong proficiency in GAAP, Excel, and grant management software to ensure accurate, timely reporting for government funders.

Requirements

  • Prepare, analyze, interpret, and present financial and grant-related data
  • Monitor grant expenditures, cost allocations, and reimbursement processes to ensure compliance
  • Develop and maintain financial reports, dashboards, and templates using ERP Cloud systems and Business Intelligence tools
  • Review and manage grant lifecycle activities including setup, post-award monitoring, and closeout
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, GASB, and applicable grant regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting experience (municipal or public sector experience, preferred)
  • One (1) year in federal grant management (specifically HUD/CDBG) preferred.
