Job Description

Summary

This job involves working with computer mapping systems to update and manage data on water and sewer infrastructure for the city's utilities department, while also helping customers with service requests.

You'll spend time entering information from surveys and drawings into digital maps, creating reports, and occasionally checking sites in the field.

It's a good fit for someone detail-oriented with a college degree and a couple of years handling mapping software, who enjoys technical work and interacting with the public.

Full Job Description

The Norfolk Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician II that supports our GIS team. Duties involve the daily input and manipulation of GIS data for the Engineering Department as well as assisting customers.

Requirements

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Uses Raw Water, Water Distribution, Sewer Gravity, Sewer Force Main, and Sewer Pump Station As-Builts and GPS/Survey data to record the respective assets to permanent record in the Utilities’ GIS Esri Enterprise geodatabase.
  • Performs a broad range of GIS tasks related to data collection, maintenance, display, and analysis.
  • Interacts with customers for water and sewer tap orders, and records requests.
  • Interacts with employees, other City departments, and external customers.
  • Reads and interprets City utility maps, plans, and technical documents.
  • Compiles, digitizes, edits, and prepares high quality maps and exhibits for the Department, City Council, interdepartmental agencies, and the public.
  • Prepares, revises, and maintains a wide variety of computer-generated maps and cartographic products using Esri ArcGIS software suite.
  • Conducts and/or assists with field investigations as needed.
  • Creates, edits, and updates Geodatabases as needed.

Qualifications

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Two years experience in GIS.

One year experience creating and editing data in ArcGIS, drafting, surveying, sub-professional engineering or a directly related field preferred.

Work Location: 500 E. Main Street, 7th Floor, Norfolk, VA 23510
Work Hours: Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm (up to two days remote work, per supervisor approval)

**This position is an Essential position which means you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, nights, weekends and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.**
