Start your journey in the environmental field with the Department of Environmental Protection as a Geoscience Trainee. Over the course of a year, you will gain hands-on experience, receive guidance from experienced professionals, and immerse yourself in the work of Geoscientists. In this dynamic role, you will assess technical documents and monitor site investigations, cleanup efforts, and environmental incidents, such as spills and discharges impacting Pennsylvania’s water resources. Requirements

As a Geoscience Trainee, you will embark on a year-long training journey where you will learn the essential duties of a Geoscientist through practical experience and mentorship. Your tasks will include reviewing and analyzing various technical documents such as work plans, SSIP permits, and corrective action reports, all of which are crucial for environmental assessment and remediation. This position will help you build a solid foundation in evaluating storage tank releases, conducting site investigations, and understanding cleanup milestones, while also honing your analytical skills to aid in regulatory decision-making.

In addition, you will play a role in examining oil and gas site spills, remediation efforts, and discharges that could impact surface water, groundwater, or private drinking water supplies. This hands-on experience will enhance your ability to assess environmental impacts, interpret data, and contribute to initiatives aimed at safeguarding public health and natural resources. Ultimately, this training will equip you with the technical knowledge and field experience necessary for advancing to a full Geoscientist position.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Some travel will be required
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $57,995 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Possession of an active Geologist-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists; or
  • A bachelor's degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology, or a closely related field including or supplemented by 30 college credits in geologic coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 30 college credits in geologic coursework.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession and maintenance of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
