Full Job Description

The Geology Section brings an understanding of the geology of Iowa and surrounding States to ensure a high level of aggregate quality for an efficient and durable transportation system.

The section helps Aggregate Producers maintain their Aggregate Producers Quality Control Programs. Assist District Materials Engineers to problem solve for quarry ledge control and product compliance.

Assist in the development of new aggregate sources – quarries, mines and sand and gravel pits.

Assist industry, district materials engineers, and area inspectors in understanding geologic formations and aggregate quality in almost 500 active aggregate sources.

Review service history and test results for new Producer source approvals.

Perform forensic investigations of aggregate performance in roadways to confirm or establish Durability Classifications for aggregate sources.

Maintain the geologic source records in electronic and physical form for up to 1000 aggregate sources.


A Geology intern will directly assist the Geologists as needed and with ongoing geologic activities in the following areas:


  • Quality Control testing of aggregates using sophisticated X-Ray Equipment such as XRF and XRD.
  • Sample prepping aggregates for Quality Control testing.
  • Importing Aggregate data into Access and LIMS.
  • Updating records management using ERMS and IM’s.
  • Geologic fieldwork in quarries, underground mines and gravel pits.
  • Pavement and Revetment reviews
  • Research projects

Duration: May-August; 40 hours/week; some travel required

Qualifications

Requirements: The position is only available to students who are currently enrolled in a degree program pertaining to the position duties.

Preferred Curriculum: Geology or Materials Engineering
