Full Job Description

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Geologist 3 with a duty station of Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

Alaska has a rich endowment of energy resources, including some of the country's most significant geothermal resource potential.

However, despite many promising indications, the state remains underexplored and urgently needs new high-quality geoscience data.

If you have a background in geology or geophysics of geothermal energy and are interested in working on an applied research team, including conducting fieldwork in some of the most remote areas of North America, please consider applying for this exciting position and help Alaska chart a sustainable future!

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), is recruiting for a Geologist 3 position in the Energy Resources Section, based in either Fairbanks or Anchorage.

The successful applicant will collect, analyze, and publish multidisciplinary data to help characterize Alaska's geothermal energy potential, attract exploration investment, and promote development success.

This position has confirmed funding until June 30, 2027; additional program support will be pursued, but cannot be guaranteed.

Mission and Values/Culture:

The Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys is a dynamic agency focusing on applied geoscience research to benefit Alaska and its residents.

The agency's mission is to determine the potential of Alaska lands for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020).

The Division views public geologic information as a key element in unlocking our natural resources, protecting communities, and helping Alaska’s economy grow.

The Energy Resources Section generates new information about the geologic framework of frontier areas that may host undiscovered oil, gas, coal, and geothermal resources.

We’ve recently expanded our work to support lower-carbon energy sources, including geologic CO2 sequestration, and to assess critical minerals in carbon ores required for many clean energy products.

Benefits of Joining Our Team:

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys offers ample opportunity for on-the-job training, a flexible work schedule, and partnerships with dedicated colleagues passionate about their work and the Division's mission.

Staff are encouraged to learn and grow through work activities, from each other’s experiences, and via structured training in technical/science topics.

Participation in conferences and workshops also provides opportunities for professional development.

This position is eligible to accrue flex time during summer fieldwork, which can be used later for personal leave.

The Geothermal Program is part of the Energy Resources Section, which includes dedicated staff who work together as a team to meet project and program goals that benefit the state of Alaska and its residents.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This Geologist 3 position may be located at the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys' (DGGS) Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Anchorage or at DGGS's Fairbanks office.

The Geothermal Program Manager is currently based in Fairbanks.

Either location is close to two of the state's main universities, providing opportunities to engage with the broader Earth Science community.

The GMC is a state-of-the-art facility; members of the Energy Section regularly utilize this facility to sample cores or teach workshops.

The daily work environment is open and collegial, allowing for collaboration and coordination among the entire DGGS staff.

Program activities may also include the opportunity to interact with Alaska Native community members.

We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following position-specific competencies.

  • Geology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of the origins and structure of the earth, including the physical forces that have shaped it and its physical and organic history.

  • Scientific Research: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of scientific principles related to environmental, ecological, biological, or physical science and the methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Partnering: Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, including monitoring and inspecting costs, work, and contractor performance.
