GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
General Environmental Technician 2 (Floricultural Helper)

Under general supervision, serve as a leader of a small crew of workers performing routine tasks involved in a variety of city services. These tasks range from engaging in work ground maintenance activities, landscape, and/or floriculturist activities conducted at park facilities (including parks, special facilities, green houses and gardens), recreation areas, public buildings, parkways, berm areas and other municipal properties.

Requirements

  • Assist in the preparation of growing media and propagation of various landscape and tropical plants.
  • Pot and repot plants, water and cultivate plants and assist with the growing of plants.
  • Assist in the maintenance of landscaped areas such as weeding, watering, deadheading, cutting back, mulching and pruning.
  • Prepare beds for planting such as rototilling, trenching, edging, adding soil, weeding and clean up.
  • Properly use basic equipment and tools in landscaping/gardening.
  • Assist floriculture staff in planting bulbs, annuals, perennials and other seasonal crops.
  • Assist in the creation and set up of season decorations.
  • Sweep, shovel snow, clean and remove trash, load and unload shipments and perform other manual labor and lifting.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E. D.
  • Two (2) years experience in grounds maintenance work, landscape and/or greenhouse work.
Licensing and Certifications
  • Valid State of Michigan Operator License; employees in this class will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle.

Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of greenhouse methods of propagation, planting and cultivation of landscape of (annuals/perennials) and tropical plants.
  • Knowledge of tools and materials commonly associated with landscaping/ground maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance of landscape plants such as deadheading, watering and weeding.
  • Skill in utilizing common gardening hand tools and equipment.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing to convey information clearly.
  • Skill in assisting with the growing of plants.
  • Strong ability to work effectively as part of a work group/team.
  • Ability to perform routine garden maintenance tasks such as weeding and watering on a daily basis.
  • Ability to interact effectively with workers, the public and others with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to display initiative, industriousness and dependability.

Physical Demands
  • The work is characterized as physical. While working in the field the incumbent will be required to work in a physical environment which will require frequent walking, standing, lifting, bending and resting on knees.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed in greenhouses and outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions and to pesticides.
