Job Description

Summary

This role involves leading health and performance efforts for NASA's spacesuit and surface mobility programs at the Johnson Space Center, ensuring human safety and efficiency in space missions by coordinating with teams and partners.

It requires overseeing project planning, risk assessment, and communication between different NASA groups and external collaborators.

Ideal candidates are experienced engineers with strong leadership in technical projects, especially those familiar with aerospace challenges and human factors in space exploration.

Full Job Description

Serves as Chief Health and Performance Officer (CHPO) for the EVA and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP), overseeing the integration of Human Health and Performance Directorate (HHPD) support into the design and implementation of systems, processes, and tools that enable the EHP to achieve its objectives, while also representing the Health and Medical Technical Authority.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work.

The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Working with commercial partners in order to develop and implement strategies for future use and recommendations for solving issues; Applying technical project management principles to include planning, baselining, resource requirements, evaluation, and project status reviews; Assessing programmatic risks, technical schedules, and cost drivers for a program and/or project.

  • Serves as Chief Health and Performance Officer (CHPO) for the EVA and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) in the Human Health and Performance Directorate (HHPD), providing primary contact and integration between HHPD and EHP.
  • Interacts with managers of program leadership on any relevant issues or questions raised.
  • Identifies and manages top Directorate issues with implementation approaches for program development.
  • Communicates effectively between organizational management and the program.
  • Represents the Directorate, integrates HHPD responses to issues, and maintains open communication between organizational management and the program as it relates to technical issues, cost, schedule, and other general concerns.
  • Coordinates agenda items with HHPD personnel to ensure proper civil servant and contractor technical support, disciplines, and experts are present at meetings based on the specific topics identified.
  • Represents Health and Medical Technical Authority (HMTA) and HHPD at EHP boards, panels, technical meetings and FRRs to provide directorate positions, advise, share information and identify/resolve issues related to the human system domains.
  • Manages budgetary activities and provides input both internal and external to HHPD that impact EHP, such as Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE).
  • Utilizes integration forums that meet regularly for interrelated cross divisional work in the programs to assure coordinated and integrated responses to issues and technical activities.
