Summary

This part-time role involves teaching and coordinating fire, rescue, and emergency medical training programs at the Baltimore County Fire Rescue Academy, mainly for new recruits and ongoing professional development.

Ideal candidates are experienced first responders with teaching certifications who enjoy mentoring others in a low-stress, 20-hour-per-week schedule.

  • Good moral character, passing background investigation, polygraph, and drug test

Full Job Description

Regular Schedule: 20 hours per week, PS XIV

A Non-Merit vacancy exists in the Baltimore County Fire Department / Fire Rescue Academy.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

THIS POSITION IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR BALTIMORE COUNTY GOVERNMENT BENEFITS OTHER THAN THOSE REQUIRED BY THE MARYLAND HEALTHY WORKING FAMILIES ACT.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

Requirements

Under close supervision, performs primarily instructional and related administrative duties within the Training and Education Bureau of the Baltimore County Fire Department, supporting the training and professional development of career and volunteer members.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Perform instruction, administration, and coordination of various EMS, fire and rescue training and education programs at the Fire Rescue Academy.
  • Provide and support of training programs for recruit programs.
  • Assist with planning and execution of various research & development of training initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Knowledge and experience of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to follow County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures. Ability to maintain records. Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or appropriate equivalent

PLUS

Be a retired sworn police or fire department employee.

Possession of current MFSPQB, NBFSPQ, IFSAC, or DoD-IFSAC (Pro Qual) certification as a Fire Service Instructor I and II.

Current MICRB (Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board) certification as an Emergency Services Instructor.

OR

Qualified as an ALS Instructor with experience.

Character Requirements
All applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, and drug test.

Citizenship Requirements
All applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of application.

Licenses and Certifications
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of application.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes an interview and responses to the supplemental questions.

Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Additional Information

The work environment is variable, depending on the assignment, and may fluctuate between an office setting, indoor setting, and outside settings.

Employee may be required to work some flexible hours based on the needs of the various assignments, and must be able to work independently without close supervision.

Employee may be required to wear professional casual attire or required attire as identified by the department.

Physical and Environmental Conditions Some positions may require exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as adverse weather and travel conditions.

Some positions may require frequent walking, standing, lifting, and carrying of equipment and objects. Requires participation in fire prevention inspections activities.

Medical Examination and Comprehensive Background InvestigationApplicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen and a comprehensive background investigation which includes but not limited to a criminal background check, psychological and polygraph examination, and fingerprinting.
