Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and managing recreation sites in Alaska's Tongass National Forest, such as cleaning facilities, repairing structures, collecting fees, and ensuring visitor safety while patrolling areas and providing information to the public.

It's ideal for someone who enjoys outdoor work, has hands-on experience with nature and maintenance tasks, and lives or has worked near the forest with knowledge of local resources.

The role requires physical effort in remote settings and a commitment to following environmental rules.

Key Requirements

  • Lived or worked in or near the Tongass National Forest boundaries with special knowledge of Southeast Alaska's natural and cultural resources to meet ANILCA eligibility
  • Ability to operate and maintain recreation sites according to operation and maintenance plans
  • Skills in scheduling activities, inspecting cleanup, and performing repairs on facilities like toilets, picnic tables, and trails
  • Experience collecting fees, reconciling money, and ensuring proper deposits as a fee collection officer
  • Capability to patrol wilderness areas, inspect permits for compliance, and conduct safety hazard analyses
  • Knowledge of Forest Service rules, regulations, and Wilderness Management Plans
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in remote backcountry locations, including trail maintenance and sign installation

These positions are located on the Tongass National Forest / Juneau Ranger District in Juneau, Alaska.

The salary of the position will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). See the Additional Information section for more information.

You must meet the ANILCA eligibility requirements to be referred for this position.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in the ???????in the Southeast Alaska area to participate in forestry technician recreation activities.

Your responses to the questions in the assessment for this announcement must clearly show that you meet the eligibility requirements. Major Duties:

  • Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans.
  • Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans.
  • Maintains and cleans developed sites, roadsides, and backcountry dispersed sites.
  • Makes repairs to damaged facilities or closes areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated.
  • Maintains recreation facilities such as toilets, road closure gates, hand pumps, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters, and other miscellaneous structures.
  • Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas.
  • Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s).
  • Serves as a unit fee collection officer. Collects fees, counts, reconciles money collected, and ensures deposits are made appropriately.
  • Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety.
  • Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
  • Patrols wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan.
  • Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety.
  • Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations.
  • Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails.
  • Positions may perform other duties as assigned.
