Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a psychiatrist in the correctional system, where you'll evaluate and treat adults in jails and a hospital unit to determine if they're mentally fit for court and help restore their competency when needed.

You'll also write reports, testify in legal settings, and advise lawyers and other health professionals, mostly through video calls with some in-person work.

It's a great fit for a licensed doctor with experience in mental health and the legal system who wants to blend medicine with justice work.

Full Job Description

Provides forensic evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations to both inpatients and outpatients.
Outpatient evaluations (812.3), conducted primarily via telehealth with a limited number of in-person assessments, occur in county jails for adult clients.
These evaluations focus on assessing competency to stand trial and addressing related legal issues within a single day. Inpatient evaluations (812.6), on the other hand, are performed on the Forensic Psychiatric hospital unit at the Iowa Medical Classification Center.
In this capacity, the Forensic Psychiatrist collaborates as a team member in restoration efforts.
Patients are admitted to the inpatient unit after being adjudicated incompetent to stand trial while in custody and identified as suitable candidates for restoration treatment.
This role also encompasses preparing objective and comprehensive forensic reports, providing expert testimony, and consulting with legal and clinical professionals as required.

Qualifications
