This job involves investigating sudden, unexpected, or suspicious deaths in King County by visiting scenes, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and notifying families, all while working in a supportive team at the Medical Examiner's Office.
It's a temporary one-year role that requires handling sensitive and emotional situations with professionalism and resilience.
A good fit would be someone with a background in law enforcement, emergency services, or healthcare who is detail-oriented, compassionate, and comfortable with high-stress environments.
Temporary opportunity. Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) positions are "at-will" positions but are eligible for benefits. This TLT is currently anticipated to last one (1) year.
However, funding sources for this work remain uncertain and dependent upon decisions actively being made at both the federal and local levels.
As a result, the end date of this position may be adjusted based on those decisions. The County and the Department continue to work to secure long term funding sources.
This vacancy can also be filled as a Special Duty opportunity.
For Special Duty Assignment interest, you must be a Career Service, Career Service Exempt or other regular (non-temporary) employee in King County who has completed their initial County probation.
You must have supervisor approval prior to taking a Special Duty Assignment.

Necessary Special Requirements
When Public Health responds to an emergency, and in accordance with relevant CBA language and/or KC policy and procedures, we may assign duties outside your regular job description.
This may involve responding at any time, including nights and weekends, with possible deployment to locations other than the department.
Work Schedule
Investigators work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day. The work takes place 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and shifts are chosen based on seniority.
As a result, newer investigators typically work night shifts for many years. All investigators work some holidays. Which holidays are worked is related to the shift/schedule you work.
Vacation/holidays off are chosen by seniority, and staffing is such that only one investigator can go on vacation at a time, so it may be many years before someone can take the most popular days off (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).
These positions cannot work remotely, and alternative schedules are not possible.
Work Location
Harborview Medical Center Campus at the Ninth and Jefferson Building (NJB) - 908 Jefferson Street, Seattle. Investigators travel all over King County for death scene investigations, but are housed in-office at Harborview.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
