The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 (Sitka Port Sampling Supervisor) located in Sitka, Alaska!


What you will be doing:

The Commercial Fisheries Division is looking for a Seasonal Fisheries Biologist 1/2 flex to lead our Port Sampling Program in Sitka!

This position is a flexibly staffed position. This vacancy may be filled at either the Fishery Biologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the selected applicant’s training and/or experience.

If filled at the Fishery Biologist 1 level, promotion to the 2 level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training.


This port sampling supervisor position assists and directs the collection of biological data from commercial salmon and shellfish landings. Data collections may include coded wire tags, fishery performance, pink sex ratios, age-length data, otoliths, genetic samples, morphometric and other biological data as directed. This information is used directly to manage State of Alaska fisheries. Some of our work is conducted as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built.

The working conditions you can expect:

The main duties of this position are performed on docks and in the processing plants in Sitka often in cold, slippery, and wet conditions, working around moving parts and heavy equipment.

Numerous sampling processes are involved, and several different sampling forms must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail and good communication skills are requirements.

There are also daily office tasks conducted at a desk in the Sitka Commercial Fisheries office.

  • Housing or food are not supplied by the department in this position.
  • This position is expected to be active 11 months annually.
  • The ability to collect data using either mobile electronic tablet or paper forms is a requirement.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work a flexible schedule that will be dependent on commercial landings and seafood processor schedules.
  • The ability to work in cold, wet, and loud conditions inside processing plants and on docks that at times will require standing while working in one place for extended periods of time is required.
  • The ability to repetitively lift fish and gear up to 50 pounds and work on the docks and inside seafood processors in inclement weather is required.

  • Experience acting as a crew leader or supervisor in fisheries research or fisheries management activities.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that will be dependent on commercial fishery openers and closures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite.

Requirements

Fishery Biologist 1

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced.

Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills.

Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.


Fishery Biologist 2
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.


Substitutions:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
